There are lots of cool things in life that can help you grow. Some of these things might be uncomfortable.
And you know that uncomfortable really means “Scary”. Many people choose their way out of anything scary. That means they’re choosing their way out of exciting and possibly life changing activities!
Does that sound like you? Are you the person who really wants to do something…but opts out at the last minute—or even sooner—because it’s uncomfortable?
I used to be that person!
Then I learned to ask myself this, “Do I really want to miss out because it’s scary?”
I found the answer was “NO!” I want to do things that scare me. I want to have fun! I want to grow!
I’m not talking about stupid, dangerous things like driving 100 miles an hour on the shoulder of the highway during rush-hour. I’m certain that, though it would be scary, and potentially life changing—or ending—there isn’t much in the way of a growth involved in something like that.
I’m talking about things like performing on stage, doing a radio interview, or learning how to dance, things that are healthy and expand the boundaries of your comfort zone.
I’m sure you have your own list of things that scare you but are still healthy growth opportunities.
So what does all this have to do with Ninjas?
One day my phone rang.
“Hello?” I answered.
“Hey sir…” My martial arts instructor said “we need one more person to be a ninja for a video shoot next week. Can you help us out?”
I thought about it for a moment. I’ve always wanted to be on screen, especially doing a “Karate Flick”. But the thought of actually performing in front of a camera had me cold. After all, the last time I was on the hook to perform my martial arts skills was in a tournament and I’d locked up like a boa constrictor was wrapped around me.
But still this was an opportunity I’d wanted all my life… So I asked myself, “Am I going to cheat myself out of this opportunity because I’m a little scared?”
“I’m in.” I said before I could talk myself out of it, got the info I needed, and said goodbye.
And you know what?
The shoot was a blast! I got to hang out with fun people and perform cool stunts! One of the best things is that I stretched my comfort zone too.
So remember that growth opportunities can be fun and rewarding too. I encourage you to say, “Yes!” the next time you’re asked to do something that is healthy and a little bit scary. You’ll learn and grow. You’ll stretch your comfort zone. You might even have…FUN!
Maybe you can be crazy like a Ninja too. 😉
