Everything is neutral until you give it meaning. And everything that happens contains equal amounts of positive and negative. Much, if not all, of the meaning you give things comes from the part of the situation you focus on. Do you focus on how the situation can help you or how it can harm you? That largely determines the impact, and meaning, of the situation for you.
Epictetus said, “Men are disturbed, not by the things that happen, but by their opinion of the things that happen.”
Think about this: Have you ever seen a community, church, or country come together to help others after a natural disaster? Or a nation step in and defend a weaker country from an aggressor? What about situations like the civil war and massacre in Rwanda where no one really stepped in but massive, positive impact has touched the world in the years following the atrocity? The more catastrophic or horrible a situation, the more good can come from it. The key is that in situations like these, people have to be willing to look for the good to find it.
In Chinese cosmology Yin and Yang represent two opposite but equal forces in nature that combine to produce all that comes to be. Yin is the feminine, passive principle and is exhibited in darkness, cold, or wetness. Yang is the masculine active principle and is exhibited in light, heat, or dryness. Neither Yin nor Yang is good or bad, those are meanings we apply to them. One cannot exist without the other; and nothing exists that isn’t an equal combination of the two. As long as something exists, there are two halves to it.
Think of it mathematically, any number greater than zero can always be divided by two and give you a result that is greater than zero. You can also divide any positive number by two infinitely without ever reaching zero. So, as you realize, everything has two parts, two halves to it. Which half are you going to focus on, the half that helps you or the half that hinders you?
It’s up to you. But I know what I choose!
So…how do you view the world?
What meaning do you give the everyday things that happen in your life? Are you optimistic and positive in most things? If so great! If you’re not, that’s ok too. Either way you’ve just made the choice to notice how you’re filtering things. Not only is this the first step in changing or improving your process—because you won’t change something if you don’t know it’s a problem—but it’s a huge step toward growing into the person you want to be.
